Ernie Gmehling

Associate Dip Eng (civil)

Ernie brings over 41 years of hands-on experience to Ground Science and is widely regarded as a leader within Australia’s geotechnical engineering community. As Managing Director, Ernie has played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s direction, culture, and technical standards since its inception in 2003.
Ernie is the current Chairman of the Australian Standards CE009 Committee, a role he has held since 2006, contributing to the development of national standards for geotechnical testing and practices. He is also an active NATA Technical Assessor and serves on NATA’s Technical Advisory Committee, where he supports the continual improvement of laboratory standards across the industry.
Over the course of his career, Ernie has developed specialist knowledge across a wide range of geotechnical disciplines, including:
  • Preparation of earthworks specifications for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects
  • Specification and management of topsoil and sodic soils for landscaping and rehabilitation
  • Development of sewer trench backfill specifications for land development
  • Design and certification of clay liners for water-holding structures such as dams, wetlands, and retention basins
  • Subgrade remediation for problematic or highly reactive ground conditions
  • Engineering for construction over soft or weak soils, including preloading and other ground improvement techniques
Ernie is also nationally recognised for his work in the sports and leisure sector, providing expert advice on turf playing fields, synthetic surfaces and hard courts, horse racing tracks, and sustainable construction practices. His work often involves material selection, performance benchmarking, and research into a range of civil engineering materials including the use of recycled materials in geotechnical applications.
A passionate advocate for practical, client-focused solutions, Ernie has authored multiple training modules for technical colleges and is a regular presenter at both national and state-level industry conferences. His leadership combines deep technical knowledge with a commitment to quality, innovation, and service excellence.

Ernie is a keen water-skier, loves international trekking and seeking adventures across the globe and is a confident and skilled woodcarver.

Ange Gentile

Diploma of Business (Admin)

Ange joined the company in November 2006 and has been instrumental in assisting the directors take the company from the small humble beginnings to what it is today. Ange was promoted to the General Manager position in July 2021 taking the lead to allow Ernie Gmehling to focus on technical aspects of the business. Ange has great organisational skills and an ability to multi-task with the ever-increasing demands on her and the team.  Ange is always happy to assist our clients with their enquiries and is fundamental in the delivery of account management which comes with over 30 years’ experience in the industry.

GEOTECHNICAL TEAM LEADER

Nathan Chow

BE (civil) NER, MIE Aust

Nathan holds a bachelor’s degree in engineering (Hons), obtained from The University of Auckland. 

“Nathan began his career in the construction industry in 2017 as a structural engineer but transitioned to geotechnical engineering after a year. He’s naturally curious about what lies beneath the surface and is motivated by understanding the deeper challenges not immediately visible.

 Since moving to Australia in 2020, Nathan has been fortunate enough to work across multiple states on a wide range of projects including Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, and Western Australia. These include land development, commercial buildings, renewable energy projects, and major infrastructure such as rail and road networks.

 Through these experiences, Nathan has developed valuable skills in project management and communication. He is known for his ability to identify issues and breaking them down piece by piece. As cliché as it may sound but challenges and pushing for continuous growth has become a core motivator for Nathan.

 He places great importance on supporting his team and fostering a positive, collaborative environment. Clients and other professionals enjoy the clarity and efficiency that come with working alongside him.

 Outside of work, Nathan enjoys a range of sports, cooking, or exploring Melbourne’s diverse food scene. He also values quality time with family and friends as one of his favourite ways to unwind.”

ENVIRONMENTAL TEAM LEADER

Jesse O'Connor

BE (Biological Science) RSP

Jesse holds a bachelor’s degree in Biological Sciences, obtained from La Trobe University, where his studies focused on environmental disciplines and soil science. Whilst completing his degree, Jesse joined Ground Science as an undergraduate environmental scientist and has since developed the skills and knowledge base to become the Environmental Team Leader.

Jesse was the first Registered Soil Practitioner to be accredited in Victoria and has been key in expanding the soil science capabilities of the environmental team to include sodic soil assessments and further developing proficiency in Land Capability Assessment’s. The environmental team’s expertise lies in early stages land development through due diligence investigations and Preliminary Site Investigations but can assist in a broad scope of contamination assessments large and small.

Outside of work, Jesse is a family man who loves to sneak in a game of golf when time permits.

Mark Longfield
LABORATORY MANAGER

Mark Longfield

Cert IV Laboratory Techniques

Mark has 20 years of experience in CMT testing and has worked on many major infrastructure projects around the state including Eastlink, Peninsula link, Westgate Tunnel, Geelong Bypass and Koo Wee Rup bypass. Mark is a skilled manager and brings a wealth of Knowledge and experience to Ground Science.

Emeterio Raquel

Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering

Emeterio is a highly experienced leader and Engineer in Manufacturing, Construction, Laboratory, Oh & s Maintenance and Quality with 30 years industry experience.  Demonstrated track record in leading lab and quality teams, proven leadership skills and the ability to relate effectively at all levels with a variety of cultures. He has well developed problem solving, interpersonal and organizational skills. Works well in team environments and is highly adaptable to change. A strong lateral thinker and has the ability to drive and implement new initiatives to deliver results.
